Sam saved the life of rookie Pat Moon

He's a hero! He stopped on the trail and saved a man's life in -5 degree temperature.

The last thing rookie musher Pat Moon remembers is running strong with his dogs down into Dalzell Gorge. He doesn't recall hitting his head on a tree. When he regained consciousness he saw his "guardian angel," fellow musher Sam Deltour, who got him safely to the next checkpoint.
Late Tuesday night Moon was resting in an emergency room bed, waiting for an MRI and other tests. He says he'll be in Nome to watch the finish, and he hopes to visit some of the checkpoints along the way to cheer on the mushers he raced alongside.
Moon, who has cancer and postponed chemotherapy to mush in this year's Iditarod, said "If I show as much enthusiasm and courage as my team did running this race, that's not going to be a problem anymore."

Wonderful

This story is a wonderful example of the sportsmanship and comaraderie exhibited by Sam, and also by the sport as a whole. You're a winner in my eyes!

Belg helpt sledehondenrenner in nood

Sam becomes hero of the Iditarod 2010

ANCHORAGE, Alaska  -- Rookie musher Pat Moon of Chicago was injured when he crashed his sled into a tree Tuesday while competing in the 1,100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Belgian musher Sam Deltour found Moon unconscious on the trail, attended to him and then checked on the 33-year-old man's team, according to Iditarod spokesman Chas St. George.

Deltour said Moon soon regained consciousness. He was flown to Providence Hospital in Anchorage, where he received a checkup.

The race spokesman said Moon's 15 dogs were not hurt but he has been scratched from the race.

Moon had decided to take on the more than 1,150 miles of frozen trails even though he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma last year. He underwent chemotherapy in the summer.

Sam!

I am not at all surprised to hear that Sam did this for his fellow musher.  My family and I had the honor of meeting Sam at a visit to the Seavey kennel last June and Sam was our guide.  I found him to be quite an amazing young man, sincere and earnest in his work and his passions.  He clearly cared for the dogs in a way that I didn't see in other trainers or mushers.  Perhaps it is his medical training or maybe he's just a truly amazing person but I think it may be both.  Sam we are proud to have met you and will follow you every step of the way.

Best of luck for a safe and rewarding race.
