At the Mile 101 checkpoint Sam and his handlers were able to celebrate Ben Turman's birthday...the first birthday ever to take place at the location.

After another break, Sam took off to conquer the ominous 4,000 foot climb to Eagle Summit on his way to the Central checkpoint. The trail has a notorious history, which was confirmed by Sam's report of a downhill steeper than black diamond ski hills with the added excitement of 14 dogs. However, Sam successfully piloted the trail keeping his dogs and himself safe and healthy.

Sam made it into the Circle City checkpoint, about 230 miles into the race, still moving at a good speed with happy dogs. After an eight hour rest, he will continue down the trail to travel on the frozen and treacherous Yukon River.

Happy Birthday Ben!

First Birthday ever at this location!
You guys are great to do this for Ben! What an awesome cake! I can't wait to hear about it, when I hear all the Yukon Quest stories when Ben comes home. You should come too, Sam! Carpe Diem
